Chapter 9 - The Breakdown of the Mercer Empire

The tension in the dining room had reached a critical, feverish pitch. The bright, high-contrast luxury setting now felt less like a palace and more like a high-security prison for Victor and Adrian Mercer. The dark mahogany table, once a symbol of their historic family reign, was now littered with broken glass, spilled red wine, and ruined pride.
Victor took a step around the head of the table, his hands trembling slightly at his sides. The authoritarian billionaire was unraveling before his son’s eyes.
“You think a little footage is going to ruin me?” Victor tried to bluster, making one last desperate attempt to regain control of the room. “I own the police chief in this district! I own the judges in the superior court! By tomorrow morning, that security footage will be wiped from the servers, and your phone will be declared inadmissible evidence!”
Claire let out a soft, melodic laugh. It was a genuine laugh, full of amused contempt for an old man who didn't realize the world had passed him by.
“You still think we’re playing by twentieth-century rules, Victor,” Claire said, taking a step forward, her heels clicking cleanly on the floor. “You think power is about who you know in the local courthouse. You forgot what I do for a living.”
She raised the phone slightly, tapping the matte-black back of the case with her index finger.
“The moment I unlocked this phone three seconds ago, an encrypted package was automatically transmitted to three separate locations: the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division, the SEC enforcement committee, and an external cloud server managed by my law firm’s senior partners.”
Victor’s face drained of what little color remained. He stumbled back a half-step, catching himself against the back of his chair.

“You... you couldn't have...” he whispered, his voice barely audible.
“The security camera footage of Adrian assaulting me is just the cherry on top,” Claire continued, her eyes fixed on Victor with relentless intensity. “It proves immediate domestic threat, granting me emergency legal protection, full access to marital assets, and immediate authority to freeze all shared estate accounts. But the background data—the ledgers you kept hidden on the local network above that wine cabinet? That’s what’s going to put you in a federal penitentiary for the rest of your natural life.”
