Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

Adrian slammed into the floor amidst the wreckage of broken glass and spilled vintage cabernet. The dark red liquid pooled around his pristine white dress shirt, resembling a gaping wound, while the expensive wine soaked into his dark trousers. He groaned in agonizing pain, his right shoulder bruised from the impact against the solid mahogany table edge.

He braced himself against the floor with his left hand, his fingers pressing into small shards of crystal, completely stunned by the sheer speed and devastation of Claire’s counterattack. The charming, powerful heir to the Mercer empire was reduced to a gasping, disheveled heap on his own dining room floor. His breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps as he struggled to comprehend how his quiet, intellectual bride had neutralized him in less than two seconds.

Claire did not linger over him. The moment his body hit the floor, she immediately released her grip on his wrist, disengaging with crisp, military discipline. She stepped backward smoothly out of his reach, ensuring she did not step on any broken glass, and stood fully upright.

Her posture was flawless. Her dark dress remained immaculate, unwrinkled by the brief physical encounter. Her long brown hair swung back over her shoulders as she looked down at her husband with absolute detachment. There was no hatred in her eyes, only the cold, unyielding resolve of a person who had drawn a line in the sand that could never be crossed again.

She looked down at Adrian, her voice dropping into an icy, unshakeable register that reverberated through the vast dining room.

“Don’t ever touch me again.”

The words were spoken with such absolute certainty that even Adrian, despite his shock and humiliation, froze on the floor, unable to meet her gaze.

Across the table, Victor Mercer had watched the entire exchange in utter disbelief. The sight of his son—the heir he had spent thirty-five years moulding in his own image—dismantled and humiliated on the floor by a woman he considered an inferior outsider broke something inside the patriarch’s mind.

Victor’s face turned a violent shade of crimson. He slammed both palms onto the table, pushing himself up so hard his heavy leather chair slid back and slammed into the wall behind him. He stood tall, his silver hair catching the light, his body trembling with raw, unadulterated fury. He raised his right hand, his long finger pointing directly at Claire’s chest, his voice booming like thunder through the estate.

“You’ll regret this!” Victor roared, his veins bulging against his collar. “You have no idea who you just laid your hands on! I will ruin you! I will destroy your career, your family, your entire life! You will leave this house with nothing!”
