Chapter 10 - Checkmate in the Mercer Estate

Adrian sank into the nearest dining chair, burying his head in his hands. The reality of his complete collapse had set in. Within twenty-four hours, his marriage was over, his reputation was destroyed, his inheritance was erased, and his freedom was hanging by a thread. The man who had tried to force his wife into obedience was now completely broken by her intellect and preparation.

Victor stood frozen, his eyes wide, gazing at his daughter-in-law as if seeing her for the very first time. The silver-haired patriarch, who had ruled his corporate empire with an iron fist for four decades, had been completely outplayed inside his own home, during a dinner he had designed to subjugate her.

Claire gripped her phone tightly in her right hand, holding it like a shield and a weapon combined. Her dark dress, long brown hair, and calm posture stood out sharply against the chaotic background of the ruined dining room. She did not need to raise her voice. She did not need to strike another blow. Her posture conveyed absolute, unassailable victory.

She took one last, slow look at the two men remaining in the room—the broken heir sitting in disgraced silence, and the shattered patriarch staring into the abyss of his own undoing.

Claire did not say another word. She turned smoothly on her heel, her dark dress flowing around her legs, and began walking toward the grand double doors of the dining room. Her footsteps echoed with rhythmic, unhurried confidence against the hardwood floor, leaving behind the broken crystal, the spilled wine, and the fallen dynasty of the Mercer family.
