Chapter 13 - COMMANDER PARKER

Emily did not return to active duty.

That surprised Gloria.

“After all this, why wouldn’t you go back?”

Emily laughed.

“Because my life is not a movie.”

She had already built another one.

She served in the Navy Reserve.

Worked in maritime risk analysis.

Mentored young intelligence officers.

Occasionally taught seminars on supply-chain integrity and analytical bias.

Her rank remained Commander.

She was proud of it.

She simply no longer needed it to enter a room before she did.

Three months after declassification, Emily returned to the veterans hall alone.

No Admiral Caldwell.

No Gloria.

No folder.

She wore the same blue sweater.

The retired chief who had taken a drink from her tray recognized her.

He stood.

“Commander.”

Emily smiled.

“Emily is fine.”

He nodded toward the bar.

“You working tonight?”

She laughed.

“No.”

“Good. Drinks here are terrible.”

They sat together.

He never asked what classified operations felt like.

He asked what ship she served on first.

She told him.

That conversation meant more than Gloria would ever understand.
