Chapter 12 - THE COST OF THE SECRET

Declassification did not erase six years.

That frustrated everyone except Emily.

People expected revelation to repair the past automatically.

It did not.

Gloria suddenly wanted photographs.

“Emily, you should wear your uniform to Thanksgiving.”

“No.”

“People should know.”

“No.”

“But after what everyone thought—”

“I don’t need a corrective parade.”

Gloria looked hurt.

Emily did not care as much as she once would have.

Her mother wanted the prestigious daughter back.

Emily was no longer willing to become that role.

Robert behaved differently.

He asked questions.

Then accepted when Emily could not answer.

He attended one counseling session with her.

Then another.

At the second, he said something that took Emily years to hear.

“I thought if I didn’t join your mother against you, I was staying neutral.”

Emily waited.

“I understand now that every time I stayed quiet, she heard agreement.”

“Yes.”

“And you heard abandonment.”

“Yes.”

Robert nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

No excuse.

No “but.”

Emily cried after that session.

Not during.

May you like

In her car.

Because sometimes an apology hurts more when it finally contains what you needed years earlier.
