Chapter 11 - THE MAN GLORIA HAD BEEN TRYING TO IMPRESS
There was another reason Gloria had wanted Emily at the veterans hall.
And another reason she wanted her diminished.
Grant Vale was scheduled to attend.
Not the Grant Vale from the classified case himself—he had long since faced federal consequences and was no longer part of that world—but his older brother, Charles Vale, remained prominent in local veterans charities and had spent years insisting Grant had been treated unfairly.
Gloria had recently joined one of Charles’s committees.
She knew vaguely that Emily’s failed Navy assignment had involved “a procurement issue.”
She did not know Grant Vale’s role.
That afternoon, Charles was sitting three tables away when Caldwell announced Operation Lantern Tide had been declassified.
He understood faster than Gloria.
His face changed.
He left before dinner.
Later, Gloria discovered why.
Grant’s conviction and debarment had been connected partly to evidence developed through Emily’s task group.
The daughter Gloria had mocked as a Navy failure had helped expose the very network connected to the family whose approval Gloria had been courting socially.
It was almost too symmetrical.
Emily found no pleasure in it.
Gloria did.
