Chapter 6 - “TYLER’S FUTURE”

Officer Mason asked Linda and Richard to leave the room.

Linda refused.

“She needs us.”

Emma looked at her.

“No.”

The word sounded small.

But Linda heard it.

Officer Mason repeated the request.

Hospital security was called only when Linda began arguing.

Richard stood.

“Come on.”

She stared at him.

He would later claim that moment was when he realized things had gone too far.

Emma did not believe him.

Things had gone too far years earlier.

He had simply run out of places to look away.

Once alone, Mason sat beside Emma.

“I need to ask you some questions, but we can stop anytime.”

“Is Tyler arrested?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because investigations aren’t completed by watching thirty seconds of video.”

Emma almost laughed.

It hurt.

Good answer.

Mason explained that the footage would be preserved.

Vehicle data would be obtained.

Witnesses interviewed.

Toxicology and medical records handled through legal process.

Tyler’s prior driving restrictions verified.

Nothing would happen instantly.

Emma appreciated that.

Then she asked:

“What did Mom mean about his future?”

Mason hesitated.

“I can only tell you what relates to this case.”

“Tell me.”

Tyler had already informed officers he was in the middle of a prior DUI matter.

Another alcohol-related driving allegation could affect that case and create additional charges.

Leaving a moving vehicle while a passenger remained inside could also matter significantly depending on evidence and prosecutorial review.

Emma stared at the ceiling.

Her mother had known.

That was why she wanted Emma to confess.

Not to save Tyler from embarrassment.

To save the legal deal that years of money and family influence had been trying to preserve.
