Chapter 11 - THE CASE
Tyler was charged weeks later after investigators completed enough of the reconstruction.
Not because Linda begged.
Not because Emma demanded.
Because evidence supported prosecution.
The allegations included offenses connected to driving while prohibited, reckless conduct, leaving the scene and related matters subject to Virginia law and the prosecutor’s final charging decisions.
His prior DUI matter became significantly more difficult.
His lawyer negotiated where possible.
The dashcam limited what could plausibly be disputed.
Tyler’s defense argued he panicked after believing the vehicle was about to crash.
They emphasized intoxication impaired judgment.
They disputed any suggestion he intended harm to Emma.
That was reasonable.
Emma did not need an attempted-murder fantasy.
The truth was sufficient.
He had driven.
He had been drinking.
He knew he should not be driving.
He jumped.
He left her.
Then he lied.
Those facts were enough.
Richard gave investigators a corrected statement.
He admitted seeing Tyler take the keys.
He admitted Tyler had consumed alcohol.
His cooperation damaged his relationship with Linda.
For the first time in forty years, Richard stopped participating in her version of family loyalty.
