Chapter 10 - THE SECOND VIDEO

The dashcam footage had one more detail.

Not the jump.

The conversation twenty minutes earlier.

Before Tyler panicked.

Before the rain.

Tyler said:

“Dad will fix this if anything happens.”

Emma replied:

“Dad cannot fix another DUI.”

Tyler laughed.

“Mom can.”

Investigators heard it.

So did prosecutors later.

That line did not prove Linda planned the crash.

She didn’t.

It proved something about Tyler’s expectations.

He believed consequences were negotiable.

Because historically, they had been.

Then forensic extraction from Tyler’s phone produced messages from the previous month.

One to a friend:

License thing is temporary. Family lawyer will bury it.

Another:

Mom would sell the house before she let me do time.

Another:

Emma acts like she’s everybody’s probation officer.

None were crimes.

Together, they explained a mindset.

Tyler did not jump from the moving car because he wanted Emma hurt.

Investigators found no evidence of a plan to injure her.

He jumped because panic made him choose himself.

Again.

And in that instant, every family habit became literal.

Tyler escaped.

Emma absorbed the impact.
