Chapter 13 - RICHARD MOVES OUT

Six months after the crash, Richard moved into a furnished apartment.

Linda called it betrayal.

Richard called it temporary.

It became permanent.

The crash did not single-handedly destroy their marriage.

It exposed the structure already holding it together.

Linda managed.

Richard avoided.

Tyler failed.

Linda rescued.

Richard funded.

Emma absorbed.

Once Richard stopped funding the rescue, Linda no longer recognized the marriage.

He began therapy at sixty-three.

He hated it.

Emma found that encouraging.

The first time they had lunch after her physical therapy appointment, Richard said:

“I thought being the calm parent made me the safe one.”

Emma looked at him.

“It made you quieter.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

That was the hardest admission.

Linda had been loud enough to become the obvious problem.

Richard’s silence looked harmless by comparison.

It wasn’t.

Every time he walked out of a room rather than confronting Tyler, someone else paid for his peace.

Mostly Emma.

Eventually literally.
