Chapter 9 - THE BLACK FOLDER

The folder Harrison handed Clara contained nothing magical.
No deed saying she owned the world.
No secret transfer.
No inheritance revelation.
It contained process.
Board resolution suspending Adrian’s promotion.
Outside-counsel findings.
HR authorization.
Copies of misrepresentative emails.
Governance notices.
And Clara’s current chair credentials because hotel security had been given a list of authorized corporate hosts after Adrian attempted to exclude her.
That was why Harrison said:
“Good evening, Chairwoman Vaughn.”
Not theatrics.
Correction.
Adrian stared at the folder.
“You planned this.”
Clara looked at him.
“No.”
“You’ve been trying to destroy me.”
Harrison stepped in.
“Adrian, this conversation needs to move to the private conference suite.”
“I’m speaking to my wife.”
Clara’s voice remained quiet.
“You were speaking for me. That is why we’re here.”
Guests watched.
Several looked uncomfortable.
Good.
Public humiliation was not Clara’s goal.
But she was finished protecting Adrian from the social consequences of his own behavior.
He lowered his voice.
“You’re going to let them do this to me?”
Clara nearly laughed.
Them.
The audit committee.
Independent counsel.
HR.
The CEO.
Every institution became “them” the moment it stopped giving Adrian what he wanted.
“You did this to yourself.”

That sentence made him hate her more than any insult could have.
Because there was nowhere inside it to place the blame.
