Chapter 14 - CLARA’S FATHER

Jonathan recovered enough to attend one board meeting the following spring.

He walked with a cane.

Spoke more slowly.

Still intimidated half the room without trying.

Afterward, Clara sat with him in his study.

He asked:

“Do you regret bringing Adrian into Vanguard?”

“I didn’t bring him in.”

“You know what I mean.”

She did.

“Sometimes.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Wrong lesson.”

“What’s the right one?”

“You disclosed the relationship. You recused. Independent people hired him. He performed well for years.”

Clara waited.

“The mistake was not that he entered.”

Jonathan looked at her.

“The mistake was letting marriage convince you that correcting him privately was enough when the company needed formal boundaries.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Clara had protected Adrian.

Not financially.

Institutionally.

She had ignored smaller incidents because she feared appearing biased against her own husband.

She overcorrected.

He benefited.

Then resented her anyway.

Jonathan smiled faintly.

“Family companies ruin themselves when people believe avoiding conflict is professionalism.”

Clara laughed.

“You and Harrison rehearse these lines?”

May you like

“He charges too much.”

That was the most normal conversation they had shared since the stroke.
