Chapter 10 - THE PROMOTION SPEECH THAT NEVER HAPPENED
Adrian was taken to a private suite with HR, Harrison, outside counsel, and the CEO.
Clara did not attend.
She returned to the ballroom.
That surprised people.
Several guests expected drama.
Instead, Clara spoke for four minutes.
She thanked clients.
Acknowledged recent leadership changes.
Said Vanguard remained committed to disciplined governance even when it was inconvenient.
She did not mention Adrian.
Did not mention marriage.
Did not mention Portwell.
Then dinner continued.
That was more devastating to Adrian than a public firing.
The company did not collapse without him.
The ballroom did not revolve around his absence.
People ate.
Deals were discussed.
Waiters cleared plates.
Life moved.
In the conference suite, Adrian was informed that his promotion had been rescinded and his employment was being terminated following review of policy violations, governance misrepresentations, and undisclosed conflicts.
He argued.
Threatened litigation.
Claimed Clara controlled the board.
Harrison reminded him Clara had recused herself.
Adrian asked to see the vote.
Unanimous among participating directors.
That silenced him for almost ten seconds.
Then he demanded access to the ballroom to “correct the record.”
HR refused.
