Chapter 4 - WHEN JONATHAN GOT SICK

Clara’s father suffered a stroke eleven months before the gala.

Not catastrophic.

But serious enough to alter everything.

Jonathan had already stepped back from management years earlier, but he remained an influential trustee and one of Clara’s closest advisers.

Clara reduced her external schedule immediately.

She continued chairing board matters remotely.

But she spent several days each week at her parents’ home and at rehabilitation appointments.

Adrian acted supportive.

At first.

“Stay with your dad.”

“I’ve got things here.”

“Don’t worry about the office.”

Clara was grateful.

Then subtle changes began.

Board materials arrived late.

Adrian increasingly called her after decisions had already been socialized internally.

Senior managers began referring to transactions as though Clara had already approved them.

One executive said:

“Adrian told us you were comfortable with the structure.”

Clara frowned.

“I haven’t reviewed it.”

The executive went pale.

That happened twice.

Then three times.

Clara confronted Adrian at home.

“You cannot speak for me in governance matters.”

“I’m not.”

“You told Connor I was comfortable with the Portwell acquisition.”

“I said you probably wouldn’t object.”

“That is speaking for me.”

He laughed.

“Clara, everyone knows you’re distracted right now.”

She stared at him.

“Distracted?”

“Your dad is sick.”

“That does not make my board authority available for temporary adoption.”

His expression hardened.

“I’m trying to keep the company moving.”

“You work for the company.”

“So do you.”

“No.”

That was the first time Clara said it clearly.

“I chair the board that oversees the company.”

Adrian did not speak to her for the rest of the night.
