Chapter 4 - Neutralizing the Threat

Inside the living room, Travis spun around at the sound of the front door slamming open. Seeing Derek standing in the entryway, Travis’s rage completely eclipsed his reason.

“Mind your own business!” Travis screamed, raising the metal baseball bat with both hands and swinging it in a wide, vicious horizontal arc aimed directly at Derek’s head.

Derek’s reaction was instantaneous. Drawing on years of elite reaction training, he slipped his head cleanly inside the trajectory of the bat, stepping inside Travis’s guard to eliminate the weapon’s leverage.

With surgical precision, Derek’s left hand caught Travis’s right wrist, while his right forearm drove down against Travis’s elbow joint, forcing the arm down.

CLANG!

The metal bat slipped from Travis’s numb fingers, crashing loudly onto the rug and rolling toward the hallway.

Before Travis could regain his balance, Derek drove his heavy shoulder directly into Travis’s chest. The impact delivered tremendous kinetic force, sending the larger man stumbling backward out of control until he crashed over the cushions of the tan sectional sofa.

In the same fluid motion, Derek executed a low sweeping kick, sending the metallic bat sliding twenty feet across the hardwood floor into the far corner of the dining area, completely out of reach.

“Uncle Derek!” Noah sobbed, scrambling out from beside the sofa and running as fast as his little legs could carry him toward his uncle.
