Chapter 1 - The Shattered Quiet of Maple Street

The afternoon sun filtered softly through the blinds of the suburban home, casting stripes of warm light across the vibrant blue rug in the living room. Under normal circumstances, this living room was a sanctuary of childhood warmth—filled with plastic building blocks, toy race cars, and plush animals scattered across the floor. But today, the domestic warmth was shattered by an atmosphere of suffocating terror.
Four-year-old Noah sat curled into a tight ball beside the armrest of the tan sectional sofa. His messy brown hair was soaked in sweat and tears, his small body trembling violently in his white T-shirt and light-colored shorts. Crying silently to avoid making a sound, his little hands cradled his left arm, which bore faint red marks and severe bruising from where he had been shoved to the floor.
Standing just four feet away was thirty-four-year-old Travis, the boyfriend of Noah’s mother. Tall, muscular, with short brown hair, Travis wore an orange T-shirt and dark jeans. His face was flushed red, eyes wide with uncontrolled rage. In his right hand, Travis held a cold, silver metal baseball bat, its surface glinting threateningly under the living room lights.
Beside Noah’s knee on the carpet lay a child-friendly smartphone with a cracked screen protector. With trembling fingers, Noah picked up the phone, held it close to his ear, and whispered through suffocating tears:
“Dad... please come home.”
The tiny speaker vibrated with the distant voice of his father asking what was wrong. But before Noah could answer, Travis’s heavy leather boots stomped across the hardwood floor. He turned his head toward the corner, his eyes locking onto the child holding the glowing screen.

“Who are you talking to?!” Travis roared, his voice booming through the house.
Raising the metal bat high over his shoulder, Travis charged aggressively toward the helpless four-year-old boy.
