Chapter 9 - THE SALE

The value of Anna’s twenty-two-percent interest had changed dramatically.

When Michael Bell died, Whitmore & Bell Development operated several commercial buildings and an engineering division. By the time Anna disappeared, the company owned hotels, redevelopment rights, and a large portfolio of waterfront properties.

Ethan’s pending sale would transfer a major portion of that portfolio to an outside investment group.

The estimated transaction value was $410 million.

If Anna’s ownership remained valid, her interest could carry enormous financial consequences.

The sale required clean shareholder title.

Richard had supplied the forged redemption agreement to establish it.

Now that document was under challenge.

Ethan understood why Anna came back before the records clearance.

The sale was scheduled to close in ten days.

Once completed, recovering assets would become far more complicated, particularly if proceeds moved through multiple entities.

Ethan instructed the company to pause closing.

Richard reacted immediately.

He called an emergency board meeting and accused Ethan of allowing a former girlfriend to sabotage a transaction that would benefit thousands of employees and investors.

Ethan arrived with David and an independent forensic accountant.

Anna did not attend.

She refused to let Richard turn the board meeting into a confrontation about her personal life instead of the documents.

The first consequence appeared in the financial statements.

Whitmore Development had already received advance financing tied to the sale. Richard used part of it to repay loans associated with his private investment ventures.

If closing failed, those loans could become due.

The forged redemption had not only allowed Richard to keep Anna’s ownership away from her.

It supported financing arrangements that made the company dependent on the lie remaining intact.

The accountant also identified payments to Vanessa beyond the original bonus.

They continued after she left the law firm.

Consulting fees.

Advisory retainers.

A special payment after Ethan proposed marriage.

The total exceeded $600,000.

Vanessa insisted she provided legitimate transaction services.

David requested deliverables.

There were almost none.

The board appointed a special committee to investigate.

Richard objected.

For the first time in Ethan’s life, his father lost a major vote.

The committee suspended the property sale pending review.

That should have felt like progress.

Then Ethan received a message from an unknown number.

A photograph.

Anna outside Lily’s school.

Taken weeks earlier.

Beneath it:

You stopped the sale. Now ask yourself whether you can protect them every hour.

Ethan showed it to Anna immediately.

She looked frightened but unsurprised.

“I told you they found us.”

He wanted to promise nobody would touch them.

Instead he asked what she needed.

“Somewhere Lily can sleep without hearing adults argue,” Anna said. “And proof that your father can’t make her disappear the way he made me disappear.”

Ethan arranged independent security and a temporary apartment outside the estate.

Anna accepted the protection.

She refused to remain in the mansion.

Ethan watched her leave with Lily and understood that discovering the truth did not automatically restore trust.

He had helped create the world she needed protection from.
