Chapter 6 - VANESSA WAS THERE BEFORE THE BEGINNING

Vanessa had told Ethan she met him four years earlier at a charity gala.

That was true.

It was not the first time she had entered the Whitmore family’s affairs.

Six years ago, Vanessa worked as a junior transactions associate at the law firm Richard used for corporate restructuring. She was twenty-nine, ambitious, and trusted enough to witness internal documents without asking whether every signature belonged to the person named.

Her name on Anna’s redemption agreement changed the timeline of the relationship.

Ethan called her into the study.

She entered wearing a simple blouse instead of the satin dress from the previous day. The change looked deliberate, as though removing the expensive fabric might also remove the image of Anna kneeling beneath her.

Ethan placed the redemption agreement on the desk.

“Explain this.”

Vanessa read the first page.

Then the witness section.

“I didn’t prepare it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I witnessed a signing package Richard gave me.”

“Did Anna sign in front of you?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“No.”

Anna looked away.

Ethan felt anger rise, but he kept his voice steady.

“Then why did you certify it?”

“Richard said she signed remotely.”

“You witnessed it.”

“I know.”

Vanessa began crying.

She said she was young, afraid of losing her position, and believed Richard when he told her the documents merely formalized a negotiated settlement.

Ethan asked whether she knew Anna’s signature was false.

“I suspected.”

“When?”

“After the transaction closed.”

That answer did not fit her behavior in the living room. She recognized Anna, knew the old agreement existed, and tried to stop her from entering Walter’s office.

Ethan asked when Vanessa discovered Anna was the maid.

“On the second day.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she was stealing records.”

“She was looking for records about herself.”

“She entered our home under a fake name!”

Anna spoke for the first time.

“You hired me.”

Vanessa froze.

Ethan turned.

Anna explained that she applied through a staffing agency under Nora Bell. The agency contacted her after an unusually fast approval from the Whitmore household. Vanessa personally changed the assignment from kitchen service to cleaning the west wing.

“You wanted me near the office,” Anna said. “You wanted to know what I remembered.”

Vanessa denied it.

Then Ethan asked security for the staffing communications.

The records showed Vanessa had requested Anna by name after receiving her application photograph.

She deliberately brought Anna into the mansion.

The next contradiction came from the broken pitcher footage.

It showed Vanessa confronting Anna after finding her near Walter’s office. Anna repeatedly asked to leave and collect Lily from the staff room. Vanessa blocked her path, threw water over her uniform, and hurled the pitcher at the floor beside her.

When Anna crouched instinctively to avoid the glass, Vanessa struck her across the face.

Lily ran for help.

Vanessa’s claim that the pitcher slipped was false.

Her claim that she had just recognized Anna was false.

And her explanation for hiring her was beginning to collapse.

Then David found one more transaction in the company records.

Three months after Anna’s redemption agreement, Vanessa received a $75,000 bonus from a Whitmore-related consulting entity.

The payment description read:

SPECIAL RETENTION SERVICES.

Ethan looked at his fiancée.

May you like

“What exactly were they paying you to retain?”

Vanessa stopped crying.
