Chapter 7 - THE BONUS

Vanessa’s bonus did not prove she had helped force Anna out.

It proved she received money from a company connected to Richard shortly afterward.

David warned Ethan against collapsing every suspicious fact into the conclusion he wanted. A payment could have a legitimate explanation. The witness certification could reflect negligent practice rather than deliberate forgery. Vanessa’s later relationship with Ethan could have begun independently.

The evidence needed a sequence.

Ethan agreed, although every instinct in him wanted to end the engagement immediately and ask questions afterward.

He moved Vanessa into a separate guest residence on the estate pending legal review. The decision enraged Richard, who called it an unnecessary humiliation of a woman who had done nothing but help him rebuild his life.

That phrase unsettled Ethan.

Help him rebuild his life.

Vanessa had appeared four years earlier, after Ethan finally stopped looking for Anna.

She listened patiently when he spoke about betrayal. She told him some people simply could not accept being loved. She praised his loyalty to family and encouraged him to trust Richard when old grief made him doubt his judgment.

Now Ethan wondered how much of her empathy had been based on information she already possessed.

David obtained Vanessa’s old employment records through counsel. The $75,000 payment was tied to a confidential project called Bell Resolution.

Her assigned responsibilities included document coordination, settlement communications, and beneficiary-contact management.

Beneficiary-contact management.

Anna had been the beneficiary.

Ethan stared at the phrase.

Then he asked David to obtain the project communications.

Several emails survived.

In one, Richard instructed Vanessa to route all communications from Anna through the family office.

In another, Vanessa reported Anna attempted to contact Ethan through his assistant.

A third email said:

Ethan remains unaware of the pregnancy. Keep direct correspondence suspended until final release.

Ethan read that sentence three times.

Vanessa knew Anna was pregnant.

At least by the time the email was sent.

She had been part of the system preventing him from learning about Lily.

The revelation did not make her responsible for everything that happened afterward, but it destroyed the story of a woman who met Ethan years later without knowledge of his past.

She had known exactly whose place she was entering.

When confronted with the emails, Vanessa admitted she helped intercept correspondence. She insisted Richard told her Anna intended to use the pregnancy to extort Ethan and destabilize the company.

“Did you believe him?” Ethan asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you ever ask Anna?”

“No.”

“Did you tell me?”

Vanessa looked down.

“No.”

Anna stood beside the window holding Lily.

For a long time, she had blamed Vanessa for joining the conspiracy.

Now she understood something worse.

Vanessa had helped maintain it because it benefited her.

The woman who appeared beside Ethan after Anna vanished was not merely lucky.

She knew the vacancy had been manufactured.

The chapter’s final discovery came from the old Bell Resolution budget.

There were payments for document preparation, legal monitoring, private investigation, and temporary accommodation.

One expense was larger than the others.

$420,000.

Recipient: M. Foster Consulting.

Anna recognized the name.

“Margaret Foster was my attorney.”

David looked up sharply.

Anna had hired Margaret after Richard threatened her with prosecution. Margaret advised her to leave New York, avoid Ethan, and stop pursuing the ownership claim until the criminal issue disappeared.

She presented herself as Anna’s only safe ally.

Now the records showed Richard paid her.

Anna had been taking legal advice from someone funded by the man threatening her.
