Chapter 14 - THE FOUNDER’S DAUGHTER

The final board hearing lasted almost seven hours.
Richard arrived with attorneys and a prepared statement describing himself as the man who saved Whitmore Development from an aging founder’s outdated agreements. He admitted paperwork irregularities but denied deliberately stealing Anna’s inheritance.
The independent committee presented the record in sequence.
Michael and Walter’s original partnership.
The valid trust transferring Michael’s interest to Anna.
The unauthorized historical assignments.
The forged redemption agreement.
The missing settlement payment.
Vanessa’s witness certification.
The intercepted correspondence.
The financial benefit Richard received from transactions completed without Anna’s approval.
Each document narrowed the room Richard had left for explanation.
When questioned about Anna’s disappearance, Richard maintained he believed she intended to leave and accepted a negotiated settlement.
David placed the matching fabricated letters on the screen.
Then Margaret Foster’s payment records.
Then the family-office email showing Richard knew Anna was pregnant and instructed staff to keep correspondence away from Ethan.
Richard stopped answering without consulting counsel.
The company consequences were substantial. The board removed him as chairman and referred the financial records to the relevant authorities. The disputed sale remained suspended while the company negotiated a restructuring that recognized Anna’s ownership rather than pretending it had vanished.
The settlement reached months later did not erase the fraud.
Anna received restoration of her rightful beneficial interest, compensation for distributions withheld during the six years, and independent governance rights over decisions affecting the Bell contribution.
The company sold several nonessential properties to stabilize debt.
Some expansion plans ended.
Ethan relinquished part of his own voting influence so no future Whitmore executive could control historical records without outside review.
Richard faced civil claims and criminal investigation concerning the forged instruments and associated financial conduct.
Vanessa faced separate consequences for her role in the document scheme and the assault on Anna. Her cooperation mattered, but it did not make the broken pitcher disappear from the security footage.
After the board hearing, Richard waited for Ethan outside the conference room.
“You let her take your grandfather’s company.”
Ethan stopped.
“Her father helped build it.”
“Your grandfather made a sentimental promise.”
“He signed a contract.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You’re choosing her over your family.”
Ethan looked at him for a long moment.
For most of his life, that sentence would have frightened him.
Now it sounded like an admission.
“Anna and Lily are my family.”
Richard looked away first.
The legal resolution could not restore the six years Richard took.
It could establish that the Bell family had never surrendered what belonged to them.
Anna did not return to the mansion after the hearing.
She chose a smaller house with a garden and a room Lily could paint any color she wanted.
Ethan helped move the boxes.

He did not ask whether he could stay.
Not yet.
