Chapter 3 - ETHAN DOESN'T GO HOME

Lauren did not yell in the school office.

That made Michael more nervous than yelling would have.

She walked straight to Ethan.

Knelt.

“Are you hurt?”

“My back.”

“Head?”

“No.”

“Did you hit it?”

“No.”

She looked at Mrs. Nolan.

“Has the nurse checked him?”

“Yes.”

Ethan had mild bruising.

Scraped palm.

No immediate sign of serious injury.

Lauren nodded.

Then looked at Michael.

“Now.”

He gestured toward the conference room.

They went inside.

Ethan stayed outside with the school counselor.

He could still hear some of it.

Lauren:

“You paid a kid to attack him?”

Michael:

“Do not call it an attack.”

Lauren:

“What would you prefer?”

Michael:

“It was content.”

Then silence.

Even Michael heard it.

The school counselor sat beside Ethan.

“You don't have to listen.”

Ethan looked at the wall.

“I kind of do.”

“Why?”

“Because when adults close doors, they change things.”

She did not argue.

Fair.

Ryan's mother came out of the principal's office.

Ryan behind her.

His eyes were red.

He looked at Ethan.

Then away.

His mother said:

“You don't need to say anything to us.”

Ethan nodded.

Ryan stopped.

“I'm sorry.”

His mother glanced at him.

Not coaching.

Waiting.

Ryan continued.

“I shouldn't have done it.”

Ethan said nothing.

Ryan looked at his shoes.

“I thought you knew it was for your dad's page.”

That made Ethan look up.

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

“You knew he wasn't going to tell me.”

Ryan swallowed.

“Yeah.”

There.

No cleaning it up.

Ethan asked:

“Why'd you do it?”

Ryan's face reddened.

“For money.”

“How much did he say at first?”

“Fifty.”

“And then?”

“He said seventy-five if you cried.”

Ethan stared.

Ryan's mother closed her eyes.

Ryan kept going because stopping would have been cowardice.

“He said don't hit your face. Don't make you fall into traffic. Just fence or ground.”

The school counselor stepped in.

“That's enough for now.”

Good.

Ethan did not need a detailed reenactment from the person who shoved him.

Ryan left with his mother.

The school issued him an immediate suspension pending disciplinary review.

Not because Michael planned it.

Ryan was fourteen.

He had still agreed to shove a younger student.

Different responsibility.

Unequal responsibility.

Both real.

Lauren came out.

Michael behind her.

Ethan looked at her.

“Can I go with you?”

“Yes.”

Michael said:

“No.”

Lauren turned.

“He asked.”

“I am his father.”

“And he is twelve.”

“That means he doesn't decide custody because he's angry.”

Lauren's face hardened.

“Then call your lawyer.”

Michael stared.

Mrs. Nolan interrupted.

“We've made a child-safety report.”

Michael turned.

“What?”

“An adult arranged physical contact against a student without the student's knowledge, for filmed content.”

“No one was abused.”

Ethan flinched.

Lauren saw.

Michael saw too.

He changed wording.

“I mean there was no intent to injure.”

Mrs. Nolan said:

“That will be for other people to evaluate.”

Michael looked furious.

Then frightened.

Ethan had rarely seen frightened.

Not when Mom got sick.

Not at the funeral.

Not when the house flooded two winters ago.

This was different.

Michael was afraid of losing control.

He looked at Ethan.

“You know I would never let anybody really hurt you.”

Ethan stared.

“You did.”

Michael opened his mouth.

Ethan continued.

“You just decided how much was okay.”

Nobody spoke.

Lauren picked up his backpack.

They left.

In her car, Ethan sat silently for six blocks.

Then:

“Did Mom know about the channel stuff?”

Lauren kept both hands on the wheel.

“Some.”

“What does that mean?”

“She knew your dad posted family videos.”

“Did she like it?”

Lauren took too long.

Ethan noticed.

“What?”

“That's a bigger conversation.”

He looked toward her.

“Everybody says that before they don't answer.”

Lauren exhaled.

“Your mom liked some of it.”

That surprised him.

“She helped at first.”

Ethan stared.

“Then why does Dad always say the channel was his way of surviving after she died?”

Lauren glanced at him.

“Because that version is easier.”

Ethan looked away.

May you like

Another door opened.

He was suddenly afraid of what was behind all of them.
