Chapter 2 - THE PART MICHAEL DIDN'T FILM

Ethan stopped three feet from him.

The school around them continued moving.

Car doors.

Parents calling names.

Buses exhaling at the curb.

A crossing guard blowing a whistle.

Everything normal.

Ethan looked at the phone.

Then at Ryan.

Then back at his father.

“You paid him.”

Michael lowered the phone.

“Ethan.”

“You paid him.”

“It wasn't supposed to hurt.”

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“That isn't what you said.”

Michael turned sharply.

“Go.”

Ryan stuffed the money into his pocket.

Ethan looked at him.

“How much?”

Ryan's face reddened.

“Dude—”

“How much?”

“Seventy-five.”

Ethan stared at his father.

Michael stepped closer.

“Let's get in the car.”

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“No.”

His voice came out louder.

A teacher near the gate turned.

Michael noticed.

His whole posture changed.

“Don't make this bigger.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“You were filming it.”

“Keep your voice down.”

“You paid him to shove me.”

“It was supposed to be controlled.”

Ryan said:

“You told me hard enough that his books go everywhere.”

Michael looked at him.

“I told you no head, no punch, no real injury.”

Ryan spread both hands.

“I didn't punch him.”

Ethan looked between them.

That sentence broke something.

Not because Ryan said it.

Because Michael clearly thought the distinction mattered.

A woman wearing a school staff badge approached from the gate.

“Everything okay?”

Michael smiled automatically.

“Yes. We're fine.”

Ethan answered at the same time.

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

The staff member stopped.

She was Mrs. Nolan, one of the assistant principals.

She recognized Ethan.

Probably Michael too.

Half the teachers did.

Michael's channel had posted the school's spring fundraiser last year.

Mrs. Nolan looked at Ethan's scraped palm.

Then at Ryan.

“What's going on?”

Nobody answered quickly enough.

She looked toward Michael's phone.

“Were you recording?”

Michael put it into his pocket.

“We were making a video.”

Mrs. Nolan frowned.

“For what?”

“Family content.”

Ryan muttered:

“He paid me.”

Michael's jaw tightened.

Mrs. Nolan heard.

“Paid you for what?”

Ryan looked like he wanted the pavement to open.

Ethan answered.

“To push me.”

Mrs. Nolan went very still.

Michael sighed.

“It was staged.”

Ethan turned.

“No, it wasn't.”

Michael frowned.

“You knew we were filming today.”

“I knew you were filming pickup.”

“You knew we'd talked about a resilience video.”

“I thought you were going to ask me questions.”

Michael looked toward Mrs. Nolan.

“He misunderstood.”

Ethan felt something violent inside his chest.

Not physical violence.

The desire to say something so sharp Michael would finally feel what he was doing.

Instead Ethan pulled off his backpack.

Dropped it at his feet.

“Then show her the messages.”

Michael stopped.

“What messages?”

“The ones where you told Ryan what to do.”

Ryan looked at Michael.

Michael looked at Ryan.

Mrs. Nolan noticed both.

“Inside.”

Michael straightened.

“We're leaving.”

“No.”

Her voice changed.

“This happened on school property involving two students. Ryan comes inside. Ethan comes inside. You can come too.”

“I am Ethan's father.”

“Yes.”

“And I'm taking him home.”

Ethan picked up his backpack.

“I don't want to go with you.”

Michael's face changed.

That landed.

Mrs. Nolan turned toward Ethan.

“Is there another adult we can call?”

Ethan's first thought was his aunt Lauren.

His mother's younger sister.

She lived twenty minutes away.

His father hated calling her.

That was almost enough reason.

“Lauren.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Ethan.”

“My aunt.”

Mrs. Nolan nodded.

“Let's go inside.”

Michael followed.

He had no choice if he wanted to keep controlling the story.

Ryan followed too.

At the office, Ethan sat in a plastic chair beneath a poster about attendance.

Michael paced.

Ryan's mother was called.

Lauren was called.

School security preserved exterior camera footage.

Mrs. Nolan asked Michael not to delete anything from his phone.

He bristled.

“That's my property.”

“Yes.”

“Are you seizing it?”

“No. I'm asking you to preserve material relevant to an incident involving minors.”

Michael stopped arguing.

Then Ryan's mother arrived.

She took one look at her son.

“What did you do?”

Ryan stared at the floor.

Michael stepped in.

“This was my arrangement.”

Ethan looked at him.

For one second, it sounded like protection.

Then Michael added:

“It was supposed to be harmless content.”

There it was.

Ryan's mother turned slowly.

“You paid my fourteen-year-old to put hands on another child for a video?”

Michael said:

“I paid him to participate in a skit.”

Ryan muttered:

“He didn't call it a skit.”

His mother looked at him.

Ryan pulled out his phone.

Michael moved.

Not toward Ethan.

Toward Ryan.

“Don't.”

Everybody saw it.

Ryan's mother took the phone first.

“Why?”

Michael stopped.

Ryan unlocked the screen.

Opened a message thread.

Held it out to Mrs. Nolan.

Ethan was too far away to read everything.

He saw one line.

Needs to look real. Hard shove. Books everywhere.

Then another.

Don't warn him or the face won't work.

Ethan looked at his father.

Michael stopped pacing.

Lauren appeared in the doorway.

She took in Ethan's scraped hands.

Michael.

Ryan.

The phone.

May you like

Then she looked directly at her brother-in-law.

“What did you do?”
