Chapter 10 - THE INTERNET FINDS RYAN

Ryan stopped going to soccer practice.

Then stopped going to school.

His mother called the police after someone threw garbage onto their porch with a note accusing Ryan of “bullying kids for clout.”

The person was never identified.

Probably another teenager.

Maybe an adult.

The internet made everyone brave from cars.

Michael's cropped video had not shown the cash.

People assumed Ryan targeted Ethan on his own.

When the truth came out through the school's family notice—not Ryan's name, just that the incident had been arranged by an adult—most people did not correct themselves.

They simply chose a new target.

Michael.

Then the Carter house.

Then Ethan.

One account accused Ethan of being “in on it for money.”

Another claimed Rebecca's cancer had been exaggerated for views.

That one made Ethan throw Lauren's tablet across the couch.

It did not break.

Lauren took it anyway.

“No more.”

Ethan stared.

“You can't make me not know.”

“No.”

She sat beside him.

“But I can stop handing you strangers' opinions as though they're evidence.”

Good.

Ryan's mother asked whether Ethan would give a statement to school confirming Ryan had apologized.

Ethan agreed.

One sentence:

Ryan shoved me after my dad paid him. Ryan apologized. I don't want people threatening him.

No video.

No joint reconciliation content.

No picture of the two boys shaking hands.

The school suspended Ryan three days and assigned restorative sessions.

He returned.

Some kids called him “actor.”

He hated it.

That consequence belonged partly to him.

Michael's larger consequence had begun too.

The mental-health sponsor terminated the contract and demanded part of its advance back.

Two other brands froze campaigns.

The channel's platform demonetized several disputed videos pending review of manipulated content involving a minor.

Michael's LLC could not meet all obligations.

He listed the family house.

Ethan found out through Melissa.

Not Michael.

Again.

“He's selling?”

Lauren looked at him.

“Yes.”

Ethan stared.

“Because of me?”

“No.”

“Don't do the adult thing.”

“What adult thing?”

“The immediate no.”

Lauren thought.

Then corrected.

“The financial crisis got worse because the school video exposed what he'd been doing.”

Ethan looked down.

“That is connected to you because you're the person he used.”

Then:

“It is not caused by you refusing to be used.”

That answer Ethan believed.

Michael requested permission to tell him himself.

Ethan agreed to a phone call.

Michael said:

“I should have sold it two years ago.”

“Probably.”

Michael almost laughed.

Then:

“I kept thinking if I could get us through one more campaign…”

Ethan looked around Lauren's guest room.

His clothes in temporary drawers.

His mother's framed photograph on the desk.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“I don't care about the house as much as you think I do.”

Silence.

Michael whispered:

“I do.”

There.

The house had never only been for Ethan.

It was for Michael.

His grief.

His proof that Rebecca's death had not erased the family.

His fear that selling meant failure.

Michael had put that fear on his son and called it sacrifice.

Then Melissa's office discovered something else.

The account ownership agreement for Ethan Strong Media LLC had been created after Rebecca died.

Michael listed himself as sole member.

That was legal enough.

But the channel itself predated the LLC.

Its original creator account had been jointly controlled.

Michael Carter.

Rebecca Carter.

And one third administrator.

Brooke Ellis.

Brooke had removed herself when she quit.

The logs showed another admin added two weeks before Rebecca died.

Name:

D. Carter

Michael said he had no idea who that was.

Lauren did.

Her face changed.

“Your grandfather.”

Ethan looked at her.

“My dad's dad?”

She nodded.

David Carter.

Michael had told Ethan for years that David never understood the channel and wanted nothing to do with it.

David died eighteen months after Rebecca.

Why had he been given administrator access before she died?

And why had Michael never mentioned it?
