Chapter 13 - THE VIDEO MICHAEL HAS TO MAKE

Michael could not repair the school-gate video by deleting it.

Ryan's face was already everywhere.

Ethan's crying face too.

So Ryan's mother proposed something through attorneys:

Michael should publicly state that Ryan had acted at Michael's request.

No ambiguity.

No blaming school bullying.

No “social experiment.”

No showing Ryan again.

No showing Ethan again.

Just Michael.

The statement would almost certainly destroy the remaining channel value.

Michael's business attorney advised against it.

Not because lying was good.

Because pending civil and criminal reviews existed.

Every public statement could be used against him.

Michael asked whether a lawyer-approved version could work.

Yes.

It would be narrower.

Safer.

Less useful.

Ethan learned about the debate from Melissa.

He said:

“Dad always says he teaches me to own mistakes.”

Melissa looked at him.

“Do you want him to make the statement?”

“I want Ryan to stop getting blamed for something Dad arranged.”

“That isn't quite the same thing.”

Ethan understood.

He was not supposed to dictate his father's legal exposure.

The adults worked it out.

Michael recorded in a plain room.

No dramatic lighting.

No thumbnail face.

No background music.

He said:

“I arranged the incident outside my son's school.”

Then:

“I paid another student to shove Ethan without Ethan knowing it was staged.”

Then:

“The other student should not have agreed to physical contact, but I was the adult who designed the situation, paid for it, filmed it, and posted an edited version that hid my role.”

He did not name Ryan.

He did not show Ethan.

He continued:

“I also previously manipulated other situations involving Ethan for content, including moving his shoes before a missed-bus video and hiding a personal item to create a reaction.”

That sentence hurt.

Still necessary.

Then:

“I described these videos as resilience content. That description does not change that I created distress for my child because real distress performed well online.”

Ethan watched with Lauren.

He felt nothing at first.

Then anger.

Then relief.

Then anger at feeling relieved.

Michael ended:

“I am taking the account offline while independent review determines what content should remain accessible, what revenue belongs to Ethan, and what I am legally permitted to control.”

No:

Please forgive me.

No crying close-up.

No sponsor.

The statement went up.

The channel went dark twelve hours later.

Comments on Ryan slowed.

Not completely.

Enough.

Sponsors terminated.

The management company sought repayment.

Michael sold the SUV.

Then listed the house.

This time he told Ethan before signing.

Ethan said:

“Okay.”

Michael stared through the supervised video call.

“That's it?”

“What do you want me to say?”

“I don't know.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You kept hurting me to save a house I would've let go.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“I know.”

The house sold two months later.

After debt, taxes, mortgage and business obligations, there was money left.

Not a fortune.

Enough.

A neutral accountant calculated disputed child-content revenue.

Nobody pretended a twelve-year-old automatically deserved every dollar a family channel earned.

Michael had worked.

Rebecca had worked.

Production cost money.

Household support benefited Ethan.

Still, the independent settlement allocated a significant additional amount into a protected account for Ethan.

Michael agreed.

Could he have fought?

Yes.

He didn't.

That cost him.

Good.

Then CPS presented the next step.

Michael could work toward unsupervised contact.

Conditions:

Parenting evaluation.

Therapy focused on boundary violations and grief.

No monetized recording of Ethan.

No private filming without Ethan's permission during the plan.

No recruiting peers into content.

No social-media management using Ethan's name or likeness.

Michael signed.

Ethan was not asked to sign anything.

He was twelve.

The adults finally stopped making him responsible for the structure adults needed.
