Chapter 22 - VANESSA’S REQUEST

Vanessa asked to see Lily.

Her attorney sent the request to Mara first, perhaps assuming biology would make her more receptive. Mara forwarded it to Claire with one sentence.

Absolutely not.

Claire agreed.

Vanessa tried again through her therapist, who claimed the request was part of accountability work and that Vanessa did not expect forgiveness. She wanted only the opportunity, someday, to apologize directly to the child she had struck.

Claire disliked the request less when it stopped pretending the meeting would help Lily.

That still did not make it a good idea.

They asked Lily’s therapist without telling Lily the request existed. The answer was immediate. Lily had nothing to gain from being placed in a room with an adult whose emotional recovery might depend on the child responding correctly.

The request was denied.

Vanessa did something Claire did not expect.

She accepted it.

Two weeks later her attorney delivered a sealed letter marked FOR LILY — ONLY IF HER PARENTS EVER DECIDE IT HELPS.

Claire did not open it.

Neither did Mara.

They gave it to Lily’s therapist, who placed it in Lily’s long-term file beside Mara’s early letters and Jonathan’s photographs.

Vanessa’s sentencing happened the following month. Her cooperation reduced the charges significantly, but she still received prison time for conspiracy, falsification and her participation in the original transfer. During allocution she admitted she had known Lily was alive, known Mara had not consented and signed anyway because Damian and Robert convinced her the family would collapse if Jonathan’s daughter remained legally connected to him.

She also addressed the slap.

Claire watched the recording later because she had no interest in attending.

Vanessa said, “I hit a child because seeing her alive forced me to look at a decision I had spent six years pretending belonged to other people.”

Claire paused the video there.

That sentence was enough.

Mara watched the full hearing. When Claire asked why, Mara said she wanted to hear whether Vanessa would say Jonathan’s name.

She did.

Vanessa admitted Jonathan tried to reverse the placement and that she helped Damian stop him.

Mara did not cry until she reached her car.

Later that night she called Claire and said, “I think I hate her less.”

Claire waited.

“That does not mean I forgive her.”

“I know.”

“I just don’t want to carry her every day.”

May you like

Claire understood.

Forgiveness was not the only way to put something down.
