Chapter 10 - WHAT VANESSA WANTED

Vanessa’s cruelty had always seemed simple. She hated Lily because Lily exposed something ugly and threatened family assets. But the records complicated her motive. Vanessa had signed the infant transfer as family representative when she was only twenty-six, not yet powerful enough to design the whole scheme. Damian controlled the trust. Dr. Voss controlled the medical narrative. The family office controlled records.

Vanessa had been useful.

That did not make her innocent.

It made her vulnerable.

Detective Ellison leaned on that vulnerability after discovering Mara’s draft email. Vanessa was interviewed again, this time with evidence that Mara had recently contacted someone at the foundation. Vanessa denied everything until Ellison showed her the transfer log bearing her signature.

Vanessa’s confidence cracked.

She said Damian told her Evelyn’s survival would destroy the family because Mara intended to use the child to take Jonathan away from the Holloways, challenge succession documents, and expose sensitive medical information. Vanessa believed the baby was being moved temporarily to a specialized placement while adults fought in court.

“Then why did the family say she died?” Ellison asked.

Vanessa said that was Damian’s decision.

“And you went along with it.”

“I was twenty-six.”

“You were old enough to sign a transfer order.”

Vanessa cried then, but Claire did not mistake tears for remorse. Vanessa admitted she saw baby Evelyn at the private facility one time before the adoption agency took custody. She knew the infant was alive. She also knew Mara was being told otherwise.

Claire’s hands curled into fists beneath the table.

“Why hit Lily?” Ellison asked.

Vanessa wiped her face. “Because she sat at the table like she belonged.”

“She did belong.”

“I know that now.”

“No,” Claire said from the corner, unable to stay silent. “You knew that when you saw the nameplate.”

Vanessa looked at her and finally dropped the last pretense. The banquet was supposed to finalize Damian’s control of Jonathan’s branch shares through a restructuring vote. Lily’s presence, even unrecognized, irritated Vanessa because it looked like fate mocking them. The slap was not strategic. It was resentment exploding in public.

Then came the real motive.

Vanessa had recently begun negotiating with Mara. She wanted Mara to sign a statement saying she knowingly placed Evelyn for adoption after suffering postpartum delusions. In exchange, Vanessa promised money and the chance to see Lily through a mediated arrangement.

Mara refused.

Instead, Mara said she was going to contact Claire directly.

Vanessa told Damian.

“And then?” Ellison asked.

Vanessa said Damian took over.

She did not know where Mara was now.

Ellison did not fully believe her, but the direction of the conspiracy sharpened. Vanessa helped move the baby, helped maintain the lie, and later tried to convert Mara’s survival into paperwork that would protect the family.

Damian remained the person with the strongest motive to silence Mara entirely.

The unexpected connection came from Vanessa’s phone. She had saved an audio message from Mara, perhaps as leverage. In it, Mara said, “You were there when they moved her. You don’t get to pretend Damian made you blind.”

Vanessa replied in text:

I can get you proof Jonathan didn’t drown by accident.

That message changed everything.

Vanessa had implied she possessed evidence about Jonathan’s death and used it to lure Mara.

Claire realized Mara might have agreed to meet not because she trusted Vanessa, but because she wanted proof for Lily.

The chapter ended when Ellison traced the meeting location from Vanessa’s deleted calendar.

Holloway Lake boathouse.

Mara had walked back into the place where Lily’s father’s story ended.
