Chapter 11 - THE BOATHOUSE TRAP

Detective Ellison organized a search of the Holloway Lake boathouse under warrant, but Damian’s lawyers moved faster than expected. They filed emergency motions claiming the boathouse contained privileged family-office archives unrelated to any criminal investigation. The judge denied most of the argument, but the delay gave the Holloways twelve hours.

By the time officers entered, the boathouse had been cleaned.

Not casually.

Professionally.

Fresh bleach marked the concrete floor near the storage lockers. A set of dock cameras had been removed. The trash bins were empty despite the property manager saying they were serviced only twice a month.

The cover-up was almost a confession.

Ellison’s team found one missed item behind a loose baseboard: a broken piece of an earring. Claire recognized it from Mara’s video. A small silver crescent.

Mara had been there.

Whether she left alive remained unknown.

Vanessa, now under pressure from both sides, agreed to another interview. She claimed Mara met her at the boathouse to receive copies of Jonathan’s old toxicology report and a recording Vanessa secretly kept from the night he died. Vanessa said Damian arrived unexpectedly, furious. She left before anything physical happened.

Claire did not believe the word unexpectedly.

Ellison asked where the recording was.

Vanessa claimed Damian took it.

The confrontation escalated when Damian arrived at the police station voluntarily with counsel and accused Vanessa of fabricating lies to reduce her own exposure. He admitted he saw Mara recently but claimed she demanded money in exchange for not dragging Lily into public scandal. He said Mara left the meeting alive and unstable, just as she had always been.

Then he made the strategic mistake everyone like him eventually made.

He referred to Lily as Evelyn.

Not “the child.”

Not “Claire’s daughter.”

Evelyn.

Ellison caught it.

Damian corrected himself, but the damage was done. He had always known who Lily was.

The trap came from Vanessa’s claim about the recording. Ellison and Claire decided to let Damian believe Vanessa had kept a second copy. Vanessa, facing charges, agreed to cooperate. She sent Damian a message from a monitored phone: I have Jonathan’s audio and Mara’s too. If I go down alone, everyone hears it.

Damian responded within four minutes.

Where?

Vanessa wrote: Not with me.

Damian called her.

The recording captured his first words clearly. “You stupid idiot. If that file exists, Claire’s child gets everything Jonathan left.”

There it was.

Damian’s fear was not reputation alone.

It was Lily’s inheritance and voting control.

The call did not prove what happened to Mara, but it proved Damian understood the stakes and believed Jonathan’s audio could undo his control.

The operation nearly collapsed when Damian realized Vanessa might be cooperating. He ended the call and disappeared from his office before officers arrived.

For six hours, nobody knew where he went.

Then Beatrice called Claire in panic. Damian had come to the estate and removed two old storage boxes from the east archive. Beatrice tried to stop him, and he told her the family would survive only if “the little girl stays a Morgan.”

Ellison issued an alert for Damian’s car.

The apparent defeat came later that night when they found it abandoned near the state line.

The boxes were gone.

So was Damian.

The one strong lead to Mara’s location had fled with whatever evidence Jonathan and Mara had once risked their lives to expose.
