Chapter 18 - THE LIST

Vanessa’s cooperation produced the list.
Detective Ellison called Claire on a Tuesday morning and asked her to come to the station without Lily. That alone was enough to make her stomach tighten. Mara met her there twenty minutes later, wearing the expression she reserved for bad news she had already decided she would survive.
Ellison placed eleven names on the table. Claire recognized only three. Damian. Vanessa. Dr. Voss. The others included a former adoption-agency director, two family-office employees, a private nurse, Jonathan’s insurance adjuster and three people whose names meant nothing to either woman.
“What is this?” Mara asked.
“Everyone Vanessa says knew Evelyn was alive before Claire adopted her.”
Mara stared at the page.
The room changed.
For a year, Claire had thought of Lily’s disappearance as something engineered by a few powerful people and maintained by a larger family culture of silence. Eleven names made it look different. Eleven adults had known enough to change the outcome, and not one had reached Claire, Mara, police or a court before Lily was permanently placed.
Ellison warned them that knowledge was not the same as criminal participation. One nurse may have believed the transfer was lawful. A clerk may have seen a living infant under a different case number without knowing the birth mother was being lied to. The point of the list was not to declare guilt but to reconstruct how many opportunities existed for truth to surface.
Mara’s finger stopped on a name.
Nina Vale.
Claire noticed. “Who is she?”
Mara did not answer immediately. “She was my postpartum nurse.”
Ellison nodded. “Vanessa says Nina moved Evelyn from the hospital to the private recovery facility.”
Mara went pale. “She told me my baby had respiratory failure.”
Claire watched the old wound reopen in real time. Mara had spent years believing Lily died after complications, then years believing the Holloways had somehow falsified records around the death. Now she was learning that one of the people who held her hand while she cried may have physically carried Lily out of the building alive.
Ellison said Nina Vale was still licensed and working in another state. She had never appeared in the original adoption inquiry because the hospital record listed a different nurse at discharge. Someone had altered the staffing sheet after the transfer.
Mara stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor. “I want to talk to her.”
“No,” Ellison said.
Mara stared.
“She is a potential witness in a homicide and kidnapping case. You do not contact her.”
“She held my daughter.”
“I know.”
“She told me she was dead.”
“I know.”
Mara’s hands shook. Claire reached for her, then stopped before touching her. Mara noticed the hesitation and took Claire’s hand herself.
That was how they sat when Ellison told them the last part. Nina had not disappeared when contacted by investigators. She had hired a lawyer within two hours and offered to surrender voluntarily.
“What does she want?” Claire asked.
Ellison looked at the list. “Immunity.”
Mara laughed without humor. “Of course.”
“For what?”
Ellison met her eyes. “She says she can prove Damian did not invent the plan to erase Evelyn.”
Claire felt the room narrow.
“Who did?”
Ellison shook her head. “She will only say it under an agreement.”

Mara looked at Claire.
For the first time in months, the old Holloway mystery had opened again.
