Chapter 9 - The Labor in the Storm

Before Marcus could take another step forward, a sudden, agonizing spasm of pain tore through Evelyn’s abdomen.

She let out a sharp gasp, her knees buckling beneath her as a warm wave of liquid spilled across her boots.

Her water had broken.

"Evelyn!" Marcus screamed, rushing forward, completely ignoring Sarah’s shotgun.

Sarah caught Evelyn under the arms, guiding her down onto the wooden porch steps as another massive contraction hit, leaving Evelyn breathless and pale.

"She’s in full labor!" Sarah shouted to Marcus. "Get inside and boil water! Now!"

The powerful crime boss, a man who commanded hundreds of armed operatives across the eastern seaboard, didn't hesitate. He tore off his expensive coat, kicked open the farmhouse door, and ran into the kitchen like a terrified servant.

For the next four hours, as a blinding blizzard swept over the Vermont hills, cutting off all phone lines and roads, the small farmhouse turned into a battleground for life.

Evelyn lay on the large wooden table in the kitchen, her screams echoing off the exposed timber beams.

Sarah worked with steady, practiced hands, while Marcus knelt beside the table, holding Evelyn’s hand. Evelyn tried to pull her hand away, but another brutal contraction hit, and she squeezed his fingers with enough force to bruise his bones.

"I’m sorry," Marcus whispered repeatedly into her hair, his face wet with tears as he wiped sweat from her brow with a damp cloth. "I’m so sorry, Evie. I’m so sorry."

At 4:12 PM, amidst the howling wind outside, a sharp, thin cry cut through the room.

"It’s a boy!" Sarah announced, wrapping a tiny, wriggling red child in a warm towel and placing him on Evelyn’s chest.

Ten minutes later, a second, softer cry followed.

"And a girl," Sarah smiled, placing the second baby beside the first.

Evelyn looked down through tears at her twin children—Leo and Clara. They were tiny, fragile, but their lungs were strong, their dark hair matching their father’s, their eyes opening to look up at the strange, warm world.
