Chapter 10 - The Unspoken Truce

For three days, the snowstorm kept the farmhouse completely isolated from the outside world.

Marcus slept on the floor beside the kitchen stove, waking every two hours to bring firewood, clean towels, and warm tea to Sarah and Evelyn.

He didn't touch the babies without permission. He sat quietly in the corner chair, watching Evelyn nurse them, his dark eyes filled with a profound, quiet reverence he had never known in his former life.

On the third night, as the storm finally cleared, leaving a crystal-blue sky over the snow-covered valley, Evelyn sat up in bed, holding Clara while Leo slept in a wooden crib beside her.

Marcus stood by the door, holding his coat.

"My men cleared the main road an hour ago," Marcus said quietly. "My uncle’s faction in Boston has been completely dismantled. The threat to your family is gone."

Evelyn looked at him, her eyes tired but clear. "And what about you, Marcus?"

Marcus looked down at his boots, then over at the two wooden cribs.

"I signed the paper trail yesterday," he revealed softly, pulling a thick envelope from his pocket and placing it on the dresser. "The Vale holdings are being restructured into a public trust. I am stepping down as head of the family. My cousin will take over operational management."

Evelyn blinked in surprise. "You gave up your family’s empire?"

"It was never an empire, Evie," Marcus said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It was a cage. I thought I could keep you safe inside it, but all I did was lock you in with my monsters."

He took a step toward the bed, looking down at his sleeping daughter, then at Evelyn.

"I won't force you to come back," Marcus promised, his voice breaking. "I bought a house three miles from here under your name. It has a garden, a nursery, and security that answers only to you. I will live in Boston. I will pay child support, and I will only see them when you allow it."

Evelyn stared at the man who had once ruled the East Coast underworld, seeing him reduced to a man simply begging for a place in his children's lives.

May you like

"Why?" she asked softly.

"Because love doesn't mean ownership," Marcus quoted her own words back to her, a faint, sad smile touching his lips. "You taught me that the night you left."
