Chapter 11 - The House on the Hill

Spring returned to Vermont, bringing green shoots through the melting snow and filling the air with the scent of wild apple blossoms.

Evelyn moved into the house on the hill—a beautiful, sunlit farmhouse with white wooden porches, four wide bedrooms, and a massive garden where red tulips were beginning to bloom.

She hired Sarah as a full-time nanny and assistant, turning part of the barn into a community health clinic funded entirely by her private trust.

Every two weeks, a black sedan would pull up the long gravel driveway.

Marcus would step out, wearing simple blue jeans and a cotton shirt, holding boxes of diapers, wooden toys he had carved himself, and fresh flowers for the kitchen table.

He never stayed overnight. He would spend four hours sitting on the porch carpet, playing with Leo and Clara, letting them climb over his shoulders and pull his dark hair while he laughed that quiet, disbelieving laugh Evelyn had remembered from her past life.

Evelyn watched them from the kitchen window, holding a cup of tea.

The resentment that had burned inside her for months had gradually cooled into a quiet, respectful distance. She saw the change in him—not a sudden, theatrical transformation, but a slow, daily effort to strip away the ruthless leader he had been raised to be.

One afternoon, as Marcus was preparing to leave for his drive back to Boston, Leo let out his first clear word, pointing his small hand at Marcus's boots: "Dada."

Marcus froze on the porch steps, his shoulders shaking as he wiped away a quick, silent tear before turning back to smile at his son.

Evelyn walked out onto the porch, picking Leo up and resting him on her hip.

"He's getting fast," Evelyn said softly. "You might need to stay an extra hour next time to keep up with him."

Marcus looked up at her, his eyes filled with immense gratitude. "I’d like that, Evie. I’d like that very much."
