Chapter 12 - The Sister's Return

In August, a small blue compact car pulled up the driveway of the Vermont farmhouse.

The driver’s door opened, and Chloe stepped out.

She looked thinner than before, her blond hair pulled back into a simple ponytail, wearing a faded linen dress. Around her neck, the silver pendant with the moon and chipped diamond star caught the bright summer sun.

Evelyn stood on the front porch, watching her sister walk slowly across the lawn.

Neither woman spoke for a long moment.

"Evie," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as tears welled in her eyes. "I’m so sorry."

Evelyn looked at her younger sister—the girl she had raised after their parents died, the girl she had tried to shield from the harsh realities of the world. She saw no malice in Chloe’s eyes, only the deep, aching guilt of someone who had been caught in a storm far bigger than she could handle.

"Come inside, Chloe," Evelyn said softly, stepping back from the door. "The babies are sleeping."

Inside the sunlit kitchen, over warm tea, the two sisters spent four hours putting together the fractured pieces of their past.

Chloe explained how Marcus’s uncle had threatened her life to gain access to Marcus’s files, and how she had gone to Marcus that night in terror to confess everything.

"I didn't know you were standing at the door, Evie," Chloe wept, holding her sister's hands across the table. "If I had known... I would have turned around. I would have stopped you."

"It's okay, Chloe," Evelyn said gently, wiping a tear from her sister's cheek. "If I hadn't walked away that night, I would still be living in a golden cage. Leaving was the best thing I ever did."

Later that afternoon, Chloe knelt on the living room rug, giggling as Leo and Clara crawled over her lap, their loud baby laughter filling the bright, peaceful house.
