Chapter 9 - The Alliance in the Shadows

My penthouse was a minimalist expanse of glass, steel, and Italian leather overlooking the Boston harbor—a stark contrast to the small, cramped apartment Marissa had called home.

I showed her to the master guest suite, where a private nursery had been set up four years ago for my late sister's visits.

"You're safe here," I told her, setting her duffel bags on the bed. "The building has twenty-four-hour private concierge security. Nobody enters without my personal authorization."

While Marissa settled Owen in the crib, I went to my study and made a call to the one person in Boston who hated my uncle Richard more than I did: District Attorney Eleanor Sterling.

Eleanor had spent six years trying to bring down corporate corruption in Massachusetts. She was tough, incorruptible, and carried a personal grudge against Whitmore Legal after Arthur Vance had embarrassed her office in an environmental compliance lawsuit three years earlier.

Thirty minutes later, Eleanor Sterling walked into my study, carrying a leather briefcase. She was a woman in her late forties, with sharp blue eyes and grey-streaked hair pulled back in a tight bun.

I laid the entire file on my desk: the blue envelope, the certified safety logs, the Aegis Holdings shell company records, and the list of seven victim families.

Sterling sat in the leather chair, examining each document with calculated, legal precision. She didn't speak for twenty minutes.

When she finally laid the last page down, she looked up at me with profound astonishment.

"This isn't just corporate negligence, Adrian," Sterling said softly. "This is systematic federal obstruction of justice, insurance fraud exceeding fifty million dollars, and reckless endangerment resulting in corporate manslaughter."

"Can you indict Richard?" I asked, leaning over the desk.

"With these original signed safety logs and Mrs. Keane's testimony?" Sterling smiled—a cold, predatory smile. "I can put your uncle behind bars for the rest of his natural life. But there’s a catch."

"What catch?"

"To trigger a federal raid on Whitmore Corporate headquarters before Richard destroys the secondary digital archives," Sterling explained, "we need an insider to pull the primary server decryption keys from the Wellesley estate tonight."

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the gray waters of the harbor.

"I know where the keys are," I said quietly.
