Chapter 12 - The Collapse of the Empire

By 6:00 AM the following morning, news of the raid at the Whitmore estate broke across every major television network in the country.

"WHITMORE GROUP EXECUTIVES ARRESTED IN MASSIVE COVER-UP; FEDERAL INDICTMENTS FILED IN 2022 PLANT EXPLOSION."

Live television broadcasts showed my uncle Richard and attorney Arthur Vance being led down the marble steps of the federal courthouse in hand-and-foot shackles, surrounded by a swarm of shouting journalists and flashing cameras.

The stock price of Whitmore Group plummeted by fifty percent in early morning trading.

I spent six hours in emergency board meetings, executing my authority as CEO to freeze all corporate assets associated with Aegis Holdings and terminating the entire legal division that had assisted in the cover-up.

At noon, I held an emergency press conference at Whitmore Corporate headquarters in downtown Boston.

Two hundred journalists filled the grand press room. Microphones were stacked three layers deep on the wooden podium.

I walked up to the podium, wearing a dark suit, carrying no prepared legal statements or PR defenses.

"Four years ago," I began, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room, "a young safety technician named David Keane saved eighty lives at Whitmore Chemical Plant 4. He did not cause the fire. He gave his life to stop it."

The room erupted into flashes as cameras clicked furiously.

"My family's company buried his heroism beneath a mountain of lies," I continued, looking directly into the primary television camera lens. "We intimidated his widow. We suppressed safety logs. We failed as human beings."

I paused, taking a deep breath, and leaned forward onto the podium.

"Today, as Chief Executive Officer of Whitmore Group, I am liquidating sixty percent of my family's private equity to establish the David Keane Victims Memorial Trust—a two-hundred-million-dollar fund dedicated to supporting families affected by corporate negligence across this nation. And we are pleading guilty to all charges."
