Chapter 9 - THE DAUGHTER BORN AFTER THE LOCKED DOORS

My daughter remained inside me for five more weeks.
I named her Clara.
Not after anyone in the family.
I wanted her first name to belong only to her.
Evelyn was present at the hospital when Clara was born, but she waited outside until I asked her to enter. That small choice mattered.
Ethan had used concern as permission to control me.
My mother began rebuilding trust by asking.
May I come in?
Do you want me beside you?
Would you like advice, or only company?
She held Clara for the first time without speaking. Tears moved down her face while the baby slept against her black blouse.
“I missed so much,” Evelyn whispered.
“So did I.”
We could not recover the years Ethan had taken.
We could refuse to give him the rest.
Maya remained my attorney and eventually became general counsel of Reed Medical Systems. Leah testified, then left public relations and entered a graduate program in legal ethics and communications.
She apologized for the months she had spent monitoring me.
