Chapter 6 - THE LIE THAT STOLE MY MOTHER

The digital investigation revealed a second betrayal unrelated to the company.

The emails that destroyed my relationship with Evelyn had been forged.

Ethan created an address differing from her official chambers account by one letter. He sent messages to me saying Evelyn considered me too emotional to manage my trust.

Then he created messages appearing to come from me, telling Evelyn she had never been a real mother and should stop interfering.

He blocked her number on my phone during our honeymoon and told me she had refused to call.

He intercepted two certified letters from her.

One was found unopened in a locked drawer inside his private office.

The other contained a warning about his attempt to obtain information from the trust administrator.

I had spent six years believing Evelyn chose professional control over me.

She had spent six years believing I had asked her to disappear.

At the hospital, she sat beside my bed but did not ask for forgiveness or attempt to explain everything at once.

“I should have come to you in person,” she said. “I told myself I was respecting your boundaries. The truth is that I was afraid you would reject me again.”

“I believed him.”

“So did I, in a different way. I believed he spoke for you.”

Neither of us was innocent of distance.

But only one person had engineered it.

Ethan isolated me from the woman most likely to recognize coercion, understand trusts and question documents. He did not merely separate a daughter from her mother out of jealousy.

He removed a legal mind he could not easily deceive.

The settlement papers demanded I surrender my company, home and medical authority.

The forged emails had already taken something more intimate.

Years.
