Chapter 7 - He Did This to Me
When the hearing resumed, Clara was called to testify.
Her hands trembled as she approached the witness stand. Daniel watched her with the old expression—the one designed to remind her what happened after she embarrassed him.
For one second, Clara could not speak.
Judge Holloway waited.
No impatience.
No rescue.
Just space.
Clara looked toward Sophie’s empty seat beside the advocate. Children were not permitted in the courtroom for this portion of the hearing.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
Her mother did not nod.
She did not tell Clara what to say.
She simply remained there.
Clara turned back toward the judge.
“He did this to me.”
Her voice broke.
Then strengthened.
She described the first incident.
The apologies.
The escalation.
The custody threats.
The financial control.
The way Daniel drafted documents to frighten her before any case had been filed.
Daniel’s attorney objected twice.
Both objections were handled normally.
That mattered.
Clara’s truth did not need special treatment.
It only needed the same serious process Daniel had told her she would never receive.
When Daniel testified, he called Clara unstable.
He said she fell frequently.
He claimed Evelyn had manipulated her.
Then Clara’s attorney played the recording again.
Daniel’s own words contradicted him.
Judge Holloway reviewed the medical report.
The emergency order.
The financial records.
The threats.
Then she ruled.
“Temporary sole physical custody remains with Clara Mercer. Daniel Mercer will have no direct contact with Clara or Sophie pending further review. Supervised visitation may be considered only after the court receives the required evaluations.”
Daniel’s face collapsed.
