Chapter 3 - The Hospital Record
Evelyn drove Clara to a hospital outside her own professional network.
She did not want anyone later arguing that her title had shaped the medical record.
A forensic nurse named Amanda Ruiz examined Clara privately while Evelyn waited with a victim advocate in a small consultation room. Every visible injury was documented carefully and without spectacle.
No dramatic photographs were passed around.
No one asked Clara why she had stayed.
Amanda asked what happened.
When.
How often.
Whether Sophie had ever been present.
Clara spoke for nearly two hours.
She described three years of intimidation, financial control, isolation, threats, and repeated assaults. She explained that Daniel had never directly harmed Sophie but had used custody as leverage whenever Clara tried to leave.
The victim advocate contacted local police and an attorney who handled emergency protective orders.
Evelyn stepped back from every legal decision.
She could not act as judge, lawyer, or investigator in her daughter’s case.
She could only be what Clara needed most.
Her mother.
By sunset, a magistrate approved temporary protection based on the medical findings and sworn statement. Police accompanied Clara to Sophie’s preschool and confirmed she was authorized to take her daughter.
At 7:42 p.m., Sophie ran into Clara’s arms.
Clara dropped to her knees and held her.
Evelyn turned away long enough to hide her tears.
Daniel had told Clara leaving would cost her child.
