Chapter 1 - The Marks

The marks across Clara’s back stopped Evelyn Hart in the doorway.

Clara had come home that morning claiming she needed a quiet weekend. She brought no suitcase, wore no wedding ring, and smiled too quickly whenever Evelyn asked about Daniel or four-year-old Sophie.

By late afternoon, rain tapped against the windows of Evelyn’s Virginia home. Clara stood in her childhood bedroom changing out of a damp blouse when Evelyn stepped in carrying clean towels.

She saw fading bruises along Clara’s ribs.

A healing cut near her spine.

Older yellowing marks beneath newer ones.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Evelyn whispered. “What happened to you?”

Clara grabbed her blouse and pulled it over her shoulders.

“Mom, please don’t.”

“What happened?”

“I fell.”

“Clara.”

Her daughter’s lips trembled.

“Daniel gets angry. Then he apologizes. He says I provoke him.”

The hallway suddenly felt too narrow.

Evelyn crossed the room and took Clara’s cold hands.

“Has he threatened you?”

Clara nodded.

“He says he’s a lawyer. He knows police officers. He knows judges. He says nobody will believe a nervous wife over a partner at Mercer, Vale and Knox.”

Evelyn’s expression became perfectly still.

Daniel knew her as Evelyn Cross, Clara’s widowed mother.

He did not know that professionally, she was Judge Evelyn Hart of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

He had spent years threatening a federal judge’s daughter without realizing whose courtroom reputation stood behind the woman he dismissed.

But Evelyn did not reach for her robe.

She reached for her phone.

“We’re going to the hospital,” she said. “Then we’re getting Sophie.”
