Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Courtroom
The emergency custody hearing was scheduled three days later in Fairfax County Circuit Court.
Another judge, Margaret Holloway, was assigned to the matter. She had no personal or professional relationship with Evelyn and disclosed on the record that she knew Evelyn only by reputation.
Daniel arrived in a dark suit with two attorneys from his firm.
He looked composed until he saw the victim advocate beside Clara.
Then he saw Evelyn.
Not in a black robe.
In a navy suit, seated behind her daughter like any other family member.
His expression briefly relaxed.
To him, she was still only Clara’s mother.
Daniel’s attorney argued first.
Clara was distressed.
The injuries were consistent with falls.
The sudden removal of Sophie showed impulsive decision-making.
Daniel was a respected attorney with no criminal record.
Judge Holloway listened without reaction.
Then Clara’s attorney introduced the hospital documentation, photographs preserved under seal, financial records, threatening drafts found on Daniel’s computer, and the recorded phone call.
Daniel’s face changed when his own voice filled the courtroom.
A bruise is not proof when I control the story behind it.
The gallery went silent.
His attorney stopped taking notes.
Judge Holloway looked directly at Daniel.
“Counselor, did you make that statement?”
Daniel leaned toward the microphone.
“The call has been taken out of context.”
Evelyn had heard those words from defendants for twenty-two years.
