Chapter 5 - The Account Behind the Celebration
Rachel handed Mark three documents.
The first was a petition for legal separation.
The second restricted him from accessing the girls’ medical information without written authorization.
The third notified him that the joint savings account had been frozen pending investigation.
Mark called me seventeen times that evening.
Then he called Claire, my doctor, and my former employer.
No one gave him my address.
The investigation into the missing money exposed the reason for Madison’s private celebration.
Mark had not merely invested forty thousand dollars.
He had submitted forged authorization documents claiming I approved a much larger transfer from my protected account. The request was rejected because Rachel had already alerted the trustee, but Mark and Madison did not know that.
They believed the transfer would clear on the afternoon of the C-section.
The cake was meant to celebrate the launch of their company with my money.
While I was signing papers to save our daughters, Mark was celebrating a theft he thought had succeeded.
The trust administrator traced two smaller unauthorized transfers into Madison’s business. Mark had used copied signatures from tax documents and redirected account notifications to a second email address.
Madison immediately claimed Mark told her I had agreed.
Mark claimed Madison prepared the paperwork.
