Chapter 3 - Three Cries

I woke hours after surgery with Lauren beside my bed.
My body felt heavy, but the first question escaped immediately.
“The babies?”
“All three are alive,” she said. “They’re being monitored closely, but they’re stable.”
I began crying before she finished.
Grace had arrived first. Lily needed breathing support for several hours. Hope—the smallest—had required the longest intervention, but she had finally cried.
Mark had missed every second.
Lauren asked whether she should contact him again.
“No.”
She hesitated. “Are you certain?”
I looked at the empty chair.
“Yes.”
Rachel arrived before midnight carrying my medical directive and a small overnight bag. She had already preserved the unanswered calls and requested documentation showing when Mark’s phone stopped receiving messages.
The next morning, he finally sent one text.
Meeting ran late. How are things?
Not Are the babies safe?
Not Did the surgery happen?
Not I’m coming.
I handed the phone to Rachel.
“Answer for me.”
She sent a formal notice stating that I had survived an emergency procedure, the children were receiving care, and all future communication would go through her.
Mark called immediately.
I did not answer.
Then Madison posted a photograph from the country club. The cake, champagne glasses, and Mark’s sleeve appeared in the frame. Her caption spoke about celebrating new beginnings.
Rachel saved it before Madison deleted it.
Four days later, the girls were medically cleared to leave with follow-up care. Claire drove us to a furnished rental outside Columbus whose address Mark did not know.
Before leaving, I removed him from the approved visitor list.
I walked out carrying Hope while nurses pushed Grace and Lily beside me.
I did not leave a note in the room.
May you like
Mark had ignored every message that mattered.
He could experience silence for himself.
