Chapter 2 - The Life He Had Already Left

Mark had been physically present throughout my pregnancy, but emotionally he had disappeared months earlier.

He attended appointments when photographs were expected. He posted pictures of my stomach and wrote about becoming a “girl dad times three.” At home, he complained that the pregnancy had made me needy.

When I could no longer sleep upstairs, he moved into the guest room.

When I asked why Madison had begun calling again, he said they were discussing a business opportunity.

Madison had been his college girlfriend. She left him for someone wealthier, returned after her divorce, and suddenly needed Mark’s help launching a luxury-event company.

I did not object to the friendship at first.

Then I discovered that Mark had transferred forty thousand dollars from our joint savings into Madison’s company.

“That was for the babies,” I said.

“It’s an investment.”

“You did not ask me.”

“I shouldn’t need permission to make decisions for my family.”

The money did not belong solely to us.

My late father had left me a protected account intended for medical costs, housing, and the future education of any children I had. Mark could not access the principal, but he repeatedly pressured me to merge it with our marital accounts.

When I refused, he accused me of planning an escape.

I was not planning one then.

But I began preparing after I found an email between him and Madison.

Once the girls arrive, Emily will be overwhelmed. She’ll sign whatever keeps life simple.

Madison replied:

Then we finally start our real future.

I sent screenshots to my attorney, Rachel Sloan. She helped me separate the remaining savings, change my medical representative, and prepare temporary guardianship documents naming my older cousin Claire if I became incapacitated.

Mark believed I was organizing nursery paperwork.

I was protecting my daughters from the man sleeping beside me.
