Chapter 7 - The Bakery Opens Again

Recovery was slow.

Bones do not heal faster because your life finally makes sense.

For weeks, I moved through my apartment with crutches, then a cane, then careful steps that reminded me patience was not always weakness.

My bakery reopened with a limited menu.

Strawberry tarts were the first thing I made.

Not because I had forgotten the accident.

Because I refused to let that day belong entirely to pain.

Nurse Chloe visited on her day off and bought six.

Dr. Bennett sent flowers with a note I did not post online, because some kindness deserves privacy.

Julian lost his position before the divorce was final.

Eleanor moved in with a cousin after discovering her son’s accounts were not as grand as his arrogance.

The Gold Coast estate remained protected and eventually sold under terms Sophia and I approved.

Not one spoon left with the Vances.

Months later, I sat in the bakery office reviewing Aurora’s quarterly reports while the kitchen downstairs filled with the smell of butter, vanilla, and lemon zest.

My leg still ached when it rained.

I still flinched at certain phone rings.

But I no longer lived inside a marriage where care meant obedience.

Arthur called to confirm the board had approved restructuring.

“Anything else, Ms. Brooks?”

I looked through the office window at my bakers moving trays from the oven.

“Yes,” I said. “Send Core Dynamics staff a real lunch stipend.”

Arthur paused.

Then laughed.

“Of course.”

I hung up and smiled for the first time in days.

Julian had believed the main asset was the estate, the SUV, the accounts, the name.

He was wrong.

May you like

The main asset had always been the woman he treated like help.

And once I remembered that, everything he thought he owned started slipping out of his hands.
