Chapter 4 - The Account Goes Dark

Back in the hospital room, Julian took one step toward my bed.
Dr. Bennett moved with him, blocking the path.
“Sir, step back.”
Julian pointed at me.
“She’s my wife.”
“She is my patient.”
That sentence changed the air.
Julian was used to people stepping aside when he said wife, mother, family, responsibility. He turned relationships into access cards.
Dr. Bennett did not swipe.
Eleanor pressed her hand to her chest.
“I am practically fainting from hunger,” she said. “And she’s lying here like a queen.”
Nurse Chloe’s eyes flashed.
I tapped my phone.
First, the emergency freeze on the high-balance joint accounts.
Then the asset protection alert.
Then the dual-signature lock on the Gold Coast estate.

The screen showed only blurred shapes from where they stood, but Julian saw enough to understand something was happening.
“What did you do?”
I set the phone on my blanket.
“Your access just ended.”
His face shifted.
Not anger.
Panic.
A beautiful, honest panic.
“You can’t freeze our accounts.”
“I froze mine.”
“They’re marital funds.”
“They are restricted under trust-linked capital protections. You would know that if you had ever read anything before bragging about it.”
Eleanor lowered her hand from her pearls.
“Julian?”
He did not answer her.
He was staring at me as if I had become visible for the first time.
I pressed the nurse call button.
“Please send hospital security,” I said. “They are interfering with my medical treatment.”
Julian’s voice cracked.

“Are you seriously kicking your husband out of a hospital?”
“A man who demands lunch from a woman with a shattered leg does not deserve that title.”
