Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind Aurora

By the time I was discharged, Attorney Sophia Sterling had already filed the first motions.

Divorce.

Emergency financial protections.

Harassment documentation.

Medical evidence.

Police report.

Julian’s false domestic complaint.

His call history.

His threats.

Every ugly thing he thought sounded private now had a folder.

He tried to play shocked husband.

It did not work well after the hospital security report described him demanding I leave medical care to serve his mother lunch.

Eleanor submitted a statement claiming I had always “resented caregiving.”

Sophia read it and laughed softly.

“That woman is about to learn the legal difference between family help and coerced labor.”

The bigger collapse came one week later.

Core Dynamics placed Julian on administrative leave pending audit findings.

Unauthorized vendor pressure.

Misuse of regional discretionary funds.

Retaliatory management practices.

And, most humiliating for him, a formal notice from Aurora Capital requiring leadership ethics review.

Julian called from a blocked number.

This time, I answered because Sophia was recording.

“What are you?” he asked.

Not who.

What.

That told me everything.

I looked out the window of my temporary recovery suite, my leg elevated, the Chicago skyline gray beyond the glass.

“I’m the woman you kept calling a tiny neighborhood baker.”

His breathing changed.

“Aurora is yours?”

“No,” I said. “Aurora is protected. I built it that way so men like you couldn’t touch it.”

“You lied to me.”

“No, Julian. You never asked a question that wasn’t about what I could do for you.”

He had no answer.

For once, silence belonged to him.
