Chapter 5 - The Chair I Paid For

Security arrived in under a minute.

Two calm men in dark uniforms stood at the doorway while Nurse Chloe moved closer to my bed.

Julian tried to straighten his suit, as if posture could restore authority.

“This is a private family matter.”

Dr. Bennett looked at him.

“No, sir. This is a medical facility.”

Eleanor pointed one manicured finger at me.

“Once you lose our family name, you won’t walk away with even one silver spoon.”

I almost smiled.

“You think your name owns the spoons?”

Julian knew then.

Not everything.

But enough to be afraid of what he did not know.

While security escorted them to the hallway, my phone buzzed with a message from Arthur Thorne, global CEO of Core Dynamics.

Audit team confirmed for tomorrow morning.

I replied with one hand.

Proceed quietly.

Arthur responded:

Are we informing the board of your position?

I looked through the glass at Julian arguing with security like a man discovering doors could close on him.

Not yet, I typed. Let him sit in the chair a little longer.

The next morning, Core Dynamics opened a routine vendor compliance audit.

At 9:12 a.m., Julian walked into his office expecting sympathy.

By 9:47, he learned company funds tied to his regional budgets were under review.

By 10:20, vendor complaints he had buried were reopened.

By 11:03, his assistant confirmed the emergency audit came from above the global CEO.

He called me at 11:04.

I did not answer.
