Chapter 5 - The Guests Change Sides

The thing about public lies is that they depend on momentum. Michael and Vanessa had planned for shock, whispers, and my emotional reaction. They had not planned for a child to interrupt the performance with one clean sentence. They had not planned for investors in the crowd to hear the words take Mommy’s company and start looking at each other.

My attorney, Daniel Pierce, was at the party because he was also my oldest friend’s husband. He had been standing near the bar with a glass of sparkling water, watching the scene with the controlled expression lawyers use when people accidentally confess in public. He stepped forward before Michael could recover.

“Andrea,” Daniel said quietly, “do you want me to call the firm?”

Michael’s eyes narrowed. “This is a family matter.”

Daniel looked at him. “You made it a public business matter when your son mentioned the company.”

Vanessa tried to laugh. “This is ridiculous. A child misunderstood an adult conversation.”

“Then you won’t mind preserving both phones,” Daniel said.

That was when Vanessa reached for her clutch.

My father moved faster than I had ever seen him move. Not touching her. Not threatening. He simply stepped into her path with a cold politeness that made her freeze. “I wouldn’t,” he said.

Michael’s face reddened. “You people are insane. Andrea stole my child from his real mother, and you’re worried about phones?”

I stood then, one hand on Leo’s shoulder. My knees felt weak, but my voice did not.

“If Vanessa is Leo’s biological mother,” I said, “we can request emergency DNA testing today.”

Vanessa’s confidence flickered.

Michael looked away first.

The party saw it.

A murmur moved across the garden, no longer aimed at me. Guests who had looked shocked by the accusation now looked suspicious of the accusers. Chloe from my finance team was already on her phone. My mother had pulled Leo’s cousins away from the center of the lawn. The emcee lowered the microphone as if it had become dangerous.

Leo leaned against my side.

I put my arm around him.

Whatever happened next, my son would know I believed him first.
