Chapter 1 - The Pointing Finger

Vanessa Cole dropped to her knees in the middle of my son’s birthday party and opened both arms as if she had any right to touch him. The music had already faded. The guests had already gone silent. Pink and white balloons shifted gently in the warm afternoon wind while the birthday cake sat untouched beneath the floral arch.

“Come to your real mommy,” Vanessa said sweetly.

Leo stepped backward so fast his little shoes dug into the grass. He moved closer to me, his navy tuxedo slightly crooked from running around the yard all afternoon, and pointed one small finger straight at her face.

The entire party froze.

My name is Andrea Miller, and until that moment, I thought the worst thing my husband could do was betray me in private. I was wrong. Michael had walked into our estate with Vanessa on his arm like she was a queen arriving for a coronation. He had taken the microphone from the emcee, looked across the backyard full of relatives, investors, business partners, and old family friends, and announced that the woman in the green sequin dress was Leo’s “real mother.”

I was kneeling on the grass beside my son, trying to understand how a birthday party had turned into a public execution of my life.

Michael lifted the microphone again, his smile still fighting to stay alive. “This is Leo’s real mother.”

Vanessa touched his arm, smug and glittering in the sunlight.

“Michael, stop this,” I whispered.

Leo did not lower his finger. His face was frightened, but serious in a way I had never seen before.

“She’s lying,” he said.

Vanessa’s smile dropped.

Then Leo took one small step closer to me and said clearly, “I heard her tell Daddy to take Mommy’s company.”
