Chapter 2 - The Party I Built

That morning, I had woken before sunrise to check every detail of Leo’s fifth birthday party. The balloon arch. The cake table. The garden seating. The soft music. The little treasure hunt cards hidden near the fountain. I built jewelry collections for women who wanted beauty to feel personal, but that party was the most precious thing I had arranged all year. It was not for clients. It was for my son.
Leo had been counting down for weeks. He wanted a “fancy adventure party,” which meant he wanted to wear a tuxedo jacket, eat too much frosting, and chase his cousins with a plastic pirate telescope. I wanted him to have one perfect afternoon untouched by the tension growing inside our house.
Michael had been distant for months. Late meetings. Locked phone. Strange charges. Cold answers. Every time I asked what was wrong, he accused me of being too focused on work. That was ironic, considering my work paid for almost everything he liked to call ours.
I had built my jewelry company from nothing. I started with wire, stones, and a rented table at weekend markets. Then came custom orders, online sales, celebrity stylists, wholesale contracts, and finally the flagship showroom downtown. Michael loved the lifestyle my business created, but he hated that he did not control the business itself.

Vanessa had been my executive assistant before I fired her for stealing from company accounts. At first, I thought she was just careless with reimbursements. Then my accountant found invoice manipulation, vendor kickbacks, and transfers routed through shell accounts. I fired her quietly to avoid a scandal while I prepared the legal file.
I never imagined she would return at my son’s birthday party on my husband’s arm.

When Michael’s black SUV rolled through the gate just after four, every conversation slowed. Vanessa stepped out beside him in a green sequin dress, smiling like she had rehearsed the shock. Michael looked at the crowd, then at me, and I realized he had not come late.
He had come staged.
